Despite the clear need and potential opportunity to advance our ability to design safer chemical products, documented success stories in the literature or industrial examples of rational design of commercial chemicals are remarkably few. This session will highlight examples of safer commercial chemical design from both industry and academia, showcasing the tools used and the cross-disciplinary collaboration that is needed to design for function, minimal hazard and minimal persistence. Special consideration will be given to the design of bio-based chemicals using this paradigm.
