This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the integration of life cycle assessment (LCA) and systems thinking approaches into chemical design and innovation. Participants will gain a working knowledge of the following key concepts:
- Applying systems thinking to understand the broader environmental, social, and policy implications of chemical products and processes.
- Understanding how planetary boundaries can be used to guide sustainable design of chemical processes.
- Exploring how policy, regulation, and consumer behavior can influence the design and sustainability of chemical products.
- Using LCA methodology and tools to quantify the environmental impacts of chemicals across their full life cycle.
- Hands-on exercises using case studies of the synthesis of pharmaceuticals that use process metrics tools to demonstrate iterative improvements in chemical design to minimize impact.
The workshop is designed for chemists, chemical engineers (including students), and other technical professionals who want to expand their skillset beyond traditional chemistry to consider the holistic sustainability of their work. Participants will leave with an understanding of incorporating LCA and systems thinking into their chemical design and innovation processes.
